Why I Open Carried for One Night on the Road

We just wanted to spend the night—cheaply. Catherine found what proved to be a “city run” RV park. The information we found provided very accurate directions leading to a picturesque  area set up for three rows of RVs

We backed into a spot with a wall of trees to our backside facing a slow moving river. I turned off the engine, exited, looked around and realized we were alone in the RV in the park,

There was a car or two but no trailers, or Class A’s, C’s, B’s, or tents.

Noteworthy was a music festival across the road from where we came in but far enough away to not be annoying

What park you ask? We’ll information indicated that someone would come around to collect the nightly fee of twenty bucks. Cheap for an American RV park with water, 30 amp service, and maybe there was a sewer hookup—maybe not,

Noone ever would (good news) which why we have no credit card line item or cash receipt to remind us where the hell the place was.

The stillness was unsettling. So much so I made an executive decision, but allow me to back up.

We were on our way to visit an 83-year-old friend of mine (my best friend, actually), girlfriend in Houston, Texas. Joe was my firearm mentor. Some gun guys have a gun safe. Joe had three. 1) handguns 2) long rifles & 3) semi and automatics along with a pickup truck utility box full of ammo and accesories.

He entrusted me with his Taurus Judge, body holster and a couple of hundre rounds. For those unfamiliar with the piece, it’s a five shot revolver firing both .45 caliber rounds and 412 shotgun rounds. Powerful and useful. We have an off grid friend who carries it on her 200 remote acre property to adjudicate snakes and small varmints. The 412 shotgun rounds make it hard to miss a close target.

My daily carry was a small Ruger 380 LCP with an American flag decal across the barrel. Nearly impossible to spot in the front right pocket of my daily worn black Dickie work trousers.

Editor’s note: I sold or placed with trusted friends all my firearms prior to entering Mexico.

Returning to the fable at hand, given the lack of humans in the park and the preponderance of humans across the road, I strapped on the Kyrdex across my chest, made a once around visual on the bus and then locked the RV door.

I slept with that fine revolver strapped across my body, like a baby
